Trolls, a staple of horror and ugly tenacity as they are, makes it quite the challenge to catalog such a species. Trolls are certainly predatory beasts, and highly aggressive as well, but their brutal, terrifying nature repels any insight to their reclusive, hidden natures. When accepted by their kind, one can see these beasts are more than legend forces them to be, they are surprisingly loyal-as well as artistic beasts.
THE COMMON MIDLAND TROLL
The Common Midland Troll is perhaps the most well known type of Troll to Nillea. Specialized for forest hunting, these Trolls are typically smaller and quicker than their brethren. These weaknesses forces them to use tribal bonds, holding them together, as opposed to their cousins' mostly solitary natures. These are most notable by their six black eyes and cunning viciousness. Working together, they can make short work of anyone who gets in their way. Being the smallest of the Trolls, they are not as tall as an average human, but still far stockier. They rely on using all fours to gain top speed, but by then they can easily outrun a man.
They are also marked by their shaggy brown fur, which is a hotbed for moss collection, apparently as both a source of pride to a Common Midland Troll and an effective camouflage. The older a troll gets, the whiter its fur becomes, forcing it either move north where it can hunt effectively, or don so much moss that only green is visible. It appears the latter is an evolved tactic, newer to the Troll modus-operandi, perhaps hinting at a growing intelligence behind the muscle.
Speaking of such, any Troll is more than capable of tearing apart a careless human. Only trained warriors can even hope to take on a single Troll alone, not to mention an entire pack.
While their nomenclature suggests they are common - and they are, relatively so compared to other Trolls - their numbers are hidden by the trees of the Great Forest. Sightings are rare, but recent scouting expeditions to allow for Nillea's expansion have shown these beasts as not only common, but somewhat apprehensive to human presence. Any time human expansion begins anew, legendary Troll singing can be heard. In a mournful tone, these beasts hope to defy the ones they fear - and oftentimes it works. Many will not go where a troll is in anguish, for fear of their rage.
The Ar'Ko'Ji'Onithil Animu Troll
The Ar'Ko'Ji'Oni, more commonly known for its homeland, Animu, is possibly the most fear-inducing Troll known currently. Judging by its massive skeletal structure, it may be a throwback to ancient times, when Trolls warred with dragons. These Trolls can be as large as twenty feet tall, and their name, meaning "Demon Sons of the Sky King" certainly fits them well. In Animu legend, the Sky King was a massive avatar of a god, the one whom created their home. If he were to have any offspring, these machines of destruction would be it.
It seems all Trolls have some sort of connection to the Ar'Ko'Ji'Onithil Troll. It is easily the least specialized Troll, and can suit any number of environments. In addition, the Islanders of Animu have written records of these beasts long before any other civilization in Nillea. How they spread to the rest of the world is unknown, but Animu legend insists the Sky King, in anger over some atrocity, spread them throughout Nillea as a reminder of his presence.
These Trolls are oddities in that they are, in addition to being quite large, are marked with various glowing patterns, much like Animu natives themselves. They have two eyes, which usually shine with a dim yellow. This often leads to connotations of stupidity such as the old disparagement "You're staring like a troll!" rising in popularity around Nillea. However, it seems these beasts were the original architects of Animu's largest temple - Animu natives have nothing but respect for them in this manner. Their fur ranges from pure black to almost luminescent white.
Being sighted so painfully rarely, Ar'Ko'Ji'Onithil Trolls are a once-in-a-lifetime sight for those outside of Animu. Even those on the island know that the odds of seeing one are exceedingly rare.
